Sorting the Motor From the Door
Opener complaints tend to fall into two groups: the door itself is heavy or binding, or the opener's electronics, gears or controls are failing. Releasing the door from the trolley and lifting it by hand tells you which. A door that floats easily by hand means the opener is the suspect.
Two settings deserve attention afterward: how far the door travels down and how much force the motor uses. Set too high, the motor stops short and leaves a gap along the floor. Set too low, it reverses before sealing. We tune both so the door lands firmly on the seal and still turns back on an obstacle.
Opener Trouble Signs
Motor hums, door stays put
A running motor with no movement can mean a stripped gear, a disconnected carriage or a spring problem in the door itself.
Remote or keypad is unreliable
Weak range, a dead button or a keypad that ignores codes often traces to batteries, pairing or a receiver on the board.
Door stops short or reverses
Closing partway then bouncing back, or leaving a gap at the floor, points at limit settings, sensors or a binding track.
How We Repair Openers
- 1
Release and test the door
We confirm the door moves freely by hand first, because a motor cannot be judged while it is fighting a heavy door.
- 2
Test the opener's parts
Controls, sensors, drive gear, carriage and circuit board are checked in turn to isolate the one that has failed.
- 3
Replace the worn component
Gears, boards, receivers and keypads are replaced where repair is sensible, with candid advice when the unit is too old.
- 4
Reset limits and force
Down travel is set so the door seats on the seal firmly, and the reversing is tested before we finish.
Opener Questions
- Is it worth repairing an older opener?
- Often yes, if the fault is a gear, circuit board or remote. If parts are no longer made, or the unit lacks the modern safety features a new one carries, we will say that replacement makes better sense. You hear the reasoning, then decide what suits your garage.
- Why does my door stop an inch above the floor?
- The down limit may have drifted, or a sensor may be reading an obstruction. A hardened or curled bottom seal can also hold the door a little above the slab. We check each of those before adjusting anything, so the cause is fixed rather than masked.
- Do I need a technician to program new remotes?
- Many remotes pair easily by following the opener's instructions. Trouble usually comes from the wrong remote type, a memory that is full or interference from nearby devices. Have the opener's label details handy and we will help sort out what is compatible and what needs replacing.
