A Door Built to Resist Wind Pressure

A garage opening is the widest in most houses, and in a strong storm wind pushes on it from outside and pulls from within. A wind-rated door is engineered with struts, heavier track and stout hardware, then tested to a stated design pressure. Passing models earn a Florida product approval, noted on the door's label.

Which rating a home needs depends on its location and the size of the opening, and replacement doors must meet it. These doors usually seal well too, with tight perimeter stops and a firm bottom edge. We read the label, explain the numbers in plain words and match the installation to the approval drawings.

Questions Worth Asking Before You Choose

  • What is the door's rating now?

A label on the door edge or inside panel often lists the model and design pressure. If it is missing or unreadable, rating cannot be confirmed.

  • Is it impact rated or not?

Some doors resist wind pressure alone, while others also withstand flying debris. Which one a home needs depends on its location and the approvals.

  • Do track and fasteners match the drawings?

A rated door depends on its specified track, anchors and bracing. Substituting parts or skipping struts invalidates the rating.

Wind Rating Questions

Is bracing an option for my current door?
Sometimes, if the manufacturer offers an approved reinforcement kit for that exact model. Homemade bracing does not change a door's rating, so the label and model number come first. If no approved kit exists, replacement is the honest answer.
What is meant by design pressure?
A measure of wind load in pounds per square foot, the force the door was tested to withstand pushing in and pulling out. A higher number means greater resistance, and the number your home needs depends on its location and the size of the opening.
Do wind-rated doors help with sealing?
Typically they close firmly, thanks to strong track and snug stops, which reduces gaps. They still depend on healthy seals, so the bottom edge and jambs get the same careful treatment as on any other door. A rated door is only as tight as its perimeter.
